It’s an outdoor shoot day in Ireland. First you pray that the weather holds, then you give your hiking boots a polish and make sure the rain jacket is ready for action. You trek half way up a mountain to get the money shot that the whole production is hanging on, right as golden hour hits… but you’re racing against the disappearing sun. Time to pull out those big lights that the team have heroically carted up the mountainside with you. But… you need power.
For years the only real option was to run a diesel generator… which meant noise… which meant the chances of a good sound recording were close to zero. Now though, thanks to advances in LED efficiency and lithium battery technology there are much quieter options. *ADR studios won’t be happy about this, but the production sound guys might be.
At Mini Mountain Creative we’ve been investing in high capacity power bank batteries, available for use on even the most remote of production away-days. These 2048Wh power stations can be used to power lights, monitors, wireless transmitters, laptops, even cameras if necessary. Or, much more importantly, the power banks can help make sure a hard-working crew enjoy a warm up of tea while they’re up that mountain at 10pm on a September evening.
When plugged into the mains power, the power banks can also function as an Uninterruptible Power Supply (UPS) with a 0.01 second switchover time – fast enough to power computers and external hard drives without so much as missing a beat if the power drops. This means that DIT and data wrangling can be done on-set, with full peace of mind that the power won’t go out mid-transfer, corrupting important hard drives and erasing incalculable amounts of priceless footage (luckily this has never happened to us, but we have heard horror stories…).
Our power banks can slow charge over-night when the electricity rate is cheaper, or they can fast charge when you return to production base for lunch, if they need to head back out for a quick turnaround. Additionally, we’ve also begun investing in solar panels, to make for a more eco-friendly approach to battery charging and to ensure our power stations can be topped up even when they’re away from base (Irish weather permitting). We also have in-car charging for getting a little extra juice while on the move.
What more can we say? It’s like the future is here and we’re all just along for the spaceship ride. Are we waffling now? Maybe. All the same, they are pretty handy things.
